Affiliate Marketing through Craigslist

Saturday 30 June 2007 @ 8:38 pm

Craiglist is an extensive online community which has a great deal to offer to users of this community. With approximately four billion page views per month it should come as no surprise that Craigslist can offer a wealth of financial opportunities to savvy Internet marketers who know how to capitalize on the popularity of this website. Affiliate marketing is one of the ways knowledgeable Internet marketers can expand on the profitability of their websites. Craigslist provides wonderful opportunities for both ecommerce website owners seeking affiliates to market for them as well as those who are in the business of affiliate marketing who are looking for new opportunities to market for another business. This article will provide an explanation of affiliate marketing and will also provide information on how Craigslist can be used to either find affiliates or affiliate opportunities.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is essentially a marketing campaign in which the business owner only pays the affiliate based on performance. Unlike conventional marketing campaigns where the business owner pays for the advertising regardless of the results produced by the advertisements, in affiliate marketing the business owner only pays when a specific result is achieved. Affiliate marketing usually takes place in the following three forms:

* Pay Per Click
* Pay Per Sale
* Pay Per Lead

In a pay per click affiliate marketing campaign the affiliate places a coded link on their website and each time a visitor to their website clicks through the link to the sponsor’s website, the affiliate receives a sum of money. The amount of money they receive is based on an agreement between the sponsor and the affiliate. This amount can be cents, dollars or even a fraction of a cent. In a pay per sale campaign the affiliate is not compensated when the visitor clicks through to the sponsor’s website unless they also make a purchase when they click through this link. Again the amount of money the affiliate receives will depend on a pre-determined agreement and may be a specific amount or a percentage of the sale. In a pay per lead program the affiliate receives monetary compensation when a visitor clicks through the affiliate link and performs a specific action such as registering at the sponsor’s website or requesting additional information.

Using Craigslist to Find Potential Affiliates

Business owners who are interested in finding affiliates to promote their website may use Craigslist for the purpose of finding these affiliates. It may seem logical to post affiliate opportunities in the jobs section of Craigslist but it is important to note this is against Craigslist’s job posting policies. Review of the policy for posting jobs on Craigslist will verify these requirements. Therefore those who are interested in finding affiliates will have to take advantage of other areas of Craigslist to find affiliates.

Visiting discussion forums related to your business may be one way to find potential affiliates. However, when using the discussion forums, care should be taken to avoiding spamming the discussion forums with links to sign up for your affiliate program. Such spamming techniques are likely to not be taken seriously by potential affiliates and may incur more severe penalties by Craigslist moderators. The best way to find potential affiliates is to make logical contributions to discussions and get to know other participants offline or to include a link to more information on your affiliate marketing program whenever you post.

Using Craigslist to Find Opportunities for Affiliates

Those who generate a profit from acting as an affiliate for others can find new affiliate opportunities through Craigslist. Although posting these opportunities on the job boards are prohibited it is possible for advertisements of this nature to appear either because the original poster was not aware of the restrictions or because they deliberately ignored the restrictions. These types of advertisements are likely to be removed when discovered but they may exist for a short time without being noticed.

Those who act as affiliates can also find potential leads by placing advertisements in the services section or the resumes section. They may also find potential leads by networking with those in the discussion forums.

The Craigslist Community

Sunday 24 June 2007 @ 11:27 pm

If you are not part of the Craigslist community, you may be missing out on a wealth of financial opportunities as well as the opportunity to learn more about the happenings in your local geographic community, the chance to debate important issues, the opportunity to meet potential friends or romantic partners and the ability to buy or sell items. Each month, Craigslist receives over four billion page views making it abundantly clear that the Craigslist community is an extensive one with many members around the world. This article will focus on just a few aspects of the Craigslist community including finding jobs, meeting friends, buying or selling items and discussing important issues.

Finding Jobs on Craigslist

One of the most well known uses of Craigslist is to find a job. These jobs can be permanent full time jobs, temporary jobs, contract positions and even telecommute positions. Those who are interested in finding a new and exciting career opportunity can browse through Craigslist and search for potential matches in a number of different categories and locations. In addition to browsing through the different categories included on Craigslist, job seekers can also use the search function to search through all of the categories for jobs which may have been placed in categories the job seeker did not consider browsing.

Community members can also find potential jobs by posting their resume through Craigslist. There is a section dedicated to resumes in Craigslist and those who are interested in posting their resume can do so for any desired location. One secret to posting a resume that will gain attention is to include a descriptive headline for your resume. For example an administrative assistant looking for work in the medical field might consider posting a headline that reads, “Administrative Assistant in Medical Field” as opposed to “My Resume”. This is helpful because those who are browsing the resumes in search of an administrative assistant are more likely to click on the first resume than the second because the aforementioned headline is more descriptive.

Meeting Friends on Craigslist

Craigslist can also provide a great opportunity for networking. Whether individuals are looking to meet a platonic friend or a romantic partner or simply looking for a roommate, there is a place on Craigslist for them to post an appropriate advertisement or view existing advertisements. Advertisements for roommates can be placed in the housing section of Craigslist while advertisements seeking friends or romantic partner may be placed in the appropriate category of the personals section. As with any posting on Craigslist, care should be taken to follow all guidelines and restrictions when posting in the personals section of the community.

Buying or Selling Items on Craigslist

Those who are looking to buy or sell items may also turn to Craigslist for assistance. Craigslist has a for sale section which is divided into sections such as bikes, furniture, musical instruments, computers, clothes, household items and even motorcycles and boats. There is even a section for those who are offering items free of charge and those who are seeking the opportunity to barter with others. There is also a wanted section for those who are seeking a specific item they cannot find offered for sale elsewhere on Craigslist. Care should be taken when purchasing any item online to ensure the item is in the condition reported in the advertisement. Craigslist offers a page dealing with scams to provide users with useful information which can help to ensure their transactions operate smoothly.

Discuss the Issues on Craigslist

Members of the Craigslist community can also discuss important local and national issues with other community members. There is a discussion forum with a number of different categories for users to exchange information or debate important issues. When participating in these forums it is wise to follow the guidelines set forth by Craigslist.

Additionally, there is a category in the personals sections called rants and raves for community members to sound off about issues which they feel are wrong. This section is restricted to community members over the age of 18 and all other visitors are cautioned that this section may contain offensive or otherwise objectionable material and should not be visited by those who are easily offended.

Director Seeks Fake Date for Real Movie Premeire?

Thursday 21 June 2007 @ 1:54 am

CraigslistWe usually try not to focus on the personal lives of actors or directors, but this caught our eye. Someone has posted on craigslist claiming to be a director looking for a date to a big hollywood movie premiere which is happening the last week of June. You can read the posting below followed by our thoughts on which director it could be (if this is in fact real):

director needs a (fake) date for a (real) movie premiere - m4m - 33

As bizarre as this sounds, I am looking for a date for a movie premiere. I directed a movie and it’s premiering the last week in June. I want to go to the premiere with a date.

Yes, there will be celebrities and industry weirdos at the premiere. Yes, there is a big party afterwards. Yes, I really am the director. Yes, it really is a real movie with real celebrities at a real premiere with a red carpet and everything.

Why am I looking for a date on Craigslist? Because I am new to Los Angeles and I dont know anyone here, and I have been working so hard on the movie I haven’t met anyone since I got here (moved from NYC to make the movie). It’s hard to meet people in LA. Especially when you’re working 14 hours a day 7 days a week.
No, you don’t have to sleep with me. Just want a reasonably good looking guy at my side as I walk down the red carpet. It’s a once in a lifetime event - why not share it?

I’m laughing out loud as I write this. It seems completely absurd. But - why not?

Here are the requirements. You are:

1. not insane
2. between 25 and 40 (give and take a year or two)
3. reasonably intelligent
4. good looking
5. not an actor who is going to try and use this as a networking opportunity (ok to be an actor - but again, not insane)
6. clean (well groomed) and sober (not a drunk or an addict)
7. willing to go along with the charade for the fun of it
8. not crazy

If you are a fellow ex-pat new yorker who went to a good college and is now living in Los Angeles wondering what the hell you are doing in Los Angeles - all the better.

There are no responsibilities beyond the premiere and the party. If we hit it off - great, we can be friends.

Part of me is hoping to find someone so incredibly good looking that he will bring traffic to a halt. But - that is kind of shallow, isn’t it. But - then again, it’s a fake date - and this is Hollywood. But - sense of humor trumps looks every time. And - you’re going to have to have a good sense of humor to pull this off.

Oh, whatever. Let’s see what happens. Please reply with a picture (to weed out crazies and freaks - although you can’t always tell).

And I’ll get back to you soon

thanks

Again - yes this is real.

Let’s take a look at the directors with movies that are (or might be) premiering in Hollywood the last week of June include:

  • Ken Kwapis (License to Wed) Age 49, From Illinois, attended USC in Los Angelels, so it’s not likely.
  • Cherie Nowlan (Introducing the Dwights) Being Female rules her out
  • Michael Bay (Transformers) Aged 42, was born and lived in Los Angeles fior most of his life. This rules him out.
  • David Yates (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) Age 43, born and lives in England. He’s out.
  • Michael Moore (Sicko) Married, lives in Michigan. He’s out.
  • George Ratliff (Joshua) Age 38. We are unable to find out where Ratliff lives, but Joshua was filmed entirely in New York City. He talks enthusiastically about the city in most of the interviews for the film. Two of his previous documentaries were filmed in Texas, which make us believe he’s from there.
  • Brad Bird (Ratatouille) Married, kids, lives in San Francisco. He’s Out.
  • Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) Married to Kate Beckinsale. Out.

If I had to choose one director from the above list, I would have to say George Ratliff is best fit. But again, this whole posting could be fake. I mean, it’s a genius way to get tons of responses to your personal ad. Imagine how many great-looking actresses have responded to this posting. I know the posting warns against them responding, but that won’t stop em’.

I’ve spent entirely too much time trying to figure this out, and must go on to other (more productive) work. What do you think? Who could it be? Am I missing someone? Is it a fake?
